With rs facing, using 4mm needles pick up and knit 49 [57:71:75:79:85] sts evenly along front edge and 6 sts evenly along rib. 55 [63:77:81:85:91] sts. Commencing with 2nd row of lxl rib

work 2 rows. For a Girl Work 4 rows in rib. Cast off in rib.

For a Boy

3rd Row. Rib 3 [3:3:2:3:3], cast off 2 sts, (rib 9 [11:11:12:10:11], cast off 2 sts) 4 [4:5:5:6:6] times, rib 1. 4th Row. Rib 2, cast on 2 sts, (rib 10 [12:12:13:11:12], cast on 2 sts) 4 [4:5:5:6:6] times, rib 3 [3:3:2: 3:3].

Work 2 rows in lib. Cast off in rib.

POCKET BORDERS (Both alike)

With rs facing, using 4mm needles work across 20 [20:28:28:32:32] sts left on a stitch holder as follows:-lst Row. Cast on 1 st, k3 [3:7:7:3:3], k2tog, (k4, k2tog) 2 [2:2:2:4:4] times, k3 [3:7:7:3:3], cast on 1 st. 19 [19:27:27:29:29] sts. (Cast on sts to be used for sewing pocket borders to fronts). Commencing with 1st row of lxl rib work 5 rows. Cast off in rib.

COLLAR

Using 4mm needles cast on 67 [75:75: 81:87:87] sts.

1st Row. (Kl, pi) 0 [2:2:0:0:01 times, (kl, pi, inc in next st, kl, pi) 13 [13: 13:15:17:17] times, inc in next st, (kl, pi) 0 [2:2:2:0:0] times, kl. 81 [89:89:97:105:105] sts. Commencing with 2nd row of lxl rib work 6 [6:8:8:9:9]cm, (21/2 [2'/>:3:3: 31/2:31/2]in), ending with a ws row. Cast off in rib.

HOOD

Using 5mm needles cast 67 [75:75: 81:87:87] sts.

1st Row. P6 [2:1:4:1:1], inc in next st purlways, (p2 [6:3:5:5:5], inc in next st purlways) 18 [10:18:12:14:14] times, p6 [2:1:4:1:1], 86 [86:94:94:102:102] sts. Proceed as follows:-

1st Row. Purl.

2nd Row. Kl, * 3 out of 1, p3tog, rep from * to last st, kl. 3rd Row. Purl.

4th Row. Kl, * p3tog, 3 out of 1, rep from * to last st, kl. From 1st to 4th row sets patt. Keeping continuity of patt as set (throughout) cont until hood measures 17 [18:19:20:22:231cm, (6V2 [7:71/2:8: 834:9]in), ending with a ws row. Next Row. Cast off 24 [24:28:28: 32:32] sts purlways, p37, cast off 24 124:28:28:32:32] sts purlways. 38 sts.

Cont in patt until hood measures 10 [10:12:12:14:14]cm, (4 [4:4^4:434: 5'/2:51/2]in) from cast off sts, ending with a ws row. Cast off purlways.

HOOD BORDER

Join hood seams. With rs facing, using 4mm needles pick up and knit 77 [81:

85:89:95:99] sts evenly all round face edge of hood.

Commencing with 2nd row of lxl rib work 5cm, (2in), ending with a ws row. Cast off in rib.

TO MAKE UP

Join raglan seams. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew pocket linings and borders in position (using cast on sts).

Cardigan with Collar

With ws of collar to rs of work and placing ends of collar to centre of front borders sew cast on edge of collar evenly in position all round neck edge. Sew on buttons.

Cardigan with Hood Fold hood border in half onto ws and slip stitch loosely in position. With rs of hood to rs of work and placing edges of hood border to centre of front borders sew hood evenly in position all round neck edge. Sew on buttons. See ball band for pressing and care instructions.
