continental knitting

Insert tip of needle into ring.
In some European countries, people knit with their hands and yarn held in a different position from the one more commonly used in the United States.
Some people may find it more comfortable to use this technique because you can keep the work close to your body, maintaining a more erect position. Try it to see which method works best for you. Either method should give good results, if followed correctly.
■ how to cast on the stitches
IForm the first stitch with a running knot placed on needle so that ball of yarn is on right-hand side of needle.
3 Rotate thumb and yarn upward so free yarn end forms a ring around your thumb. Hold end securely with other fingers.
2 Wrap yarn from ball around middle finger of left hand, then over index finger. Pass yarn from yarn end around thumb as shown, holding thumb and index finger about 2 inches (5 cm) apart.
Insert tip of needle into ring.
5 Then rotate thumb down to pass tip under the yarn from ball (wrapping it around needle) and draw up stitch. Withdraw thumb and stretch fingers, pulling yarn gently to tighten knot.
6 Catch yarn again with thumb and work as before to make desired number of stitches.
