Instructions from the Herning Museum
Size: Woman and child (about 10 years)
Yarn: 2-ply sport weight wool yarn, 100 g/4 oz each of two colors will make one pair for a woman or two pairs for a child. Needles: Dpn 3 mm/US 3 Gauge: 28 sts and 30 rows = 10 cm/4 in
Woman's size: With a size 3 mm (US 3) dpn, begin by holding together one strand of each color and casting on 1 double stitch. Then divide the two strands onto finger and thumb and continue with a standard cast-on. Cast on 56 sts; the yarn which loops around the index finger (color 2) will form the sts and the yarn around the thumb (color 1) will form the edge. Divide the sts onto four needles, 14 sts on each needle. Rnds 1 and 2: *kl color 1, pi color 2*, repeat *-*. Rnd 3: change colors, knit light sts over the dark sts and vice versa, knit all the sts in the rnd. Rnds 4 and 5: *k2 color 2, k2 color 1*, repeat *-*. Rnds 6 and 7: change colors, knitting light sts over the dark sts and vice versa, *k2 color 1, k2 color 2*, repeat *-*. Repeat pattern rnds 4-7. Knit 12 patterns of 2 pattern rnds each, for a total of 24 rnds. Continue the color pattern while working incs on the first and third needles. For the left mitten, work incs at the beginning of the needles; for the right mitten, work incs at their ends. Inc
1 st on first and third needles every round 4x: 64 sts.
Sample color pattern (left mitten): on the first inc round, add one st in color to match the
2 sts following. On second inc round, match new st to previous 2 sts. On third inc round, match new st to following st (a new 2-st unit). On fourth inc rnd, match new st to previous st (another new 2-st unit). The pattern continues its 2-st-by-2-
row alternation as before.
On the following rnd, put the first 10 sts (for the left mitten) on a stitch holder (the last 10 sts for the right mitten). Cast on 10 new sts on the next md and continue in pattern over 64 sts until the mitten reaches the tip of the little finger.
Divide the sts evenly on the needles. On the next rnd, begin the decs at the beginning of each needle: kl and put it back on the left needle. Put the needle into the next st as if to purl and draw it over the st knitted first. Slip the knitted st back on the right needle.
Knit 1 rnd without decreasing and then dec on every rnd at the beginning of each needle until 2 sts remain on each. Draw the yarn through the remaining sts.
Thumb: Pick up 10 sts from the thumbhole plus 2 sts on each side. Pick up the 10 sts from the stitch holder and divide the 24 sts evenly on three needles. Knit 8 patterns (16 rnds) or desired length. Make the decs at the beginning of each needle until 2 sts remain on each. Draw the yarn through the remaining sts. Child's size (10 years): Cast on 52 sts and follow the instructions above. Knit 10 patterns (20 rnds). Inc as above until there are 60 sts, setting aside 8 sts for the thumb. Continue knitting in pattern with 60 sts. Knit 9 patterns (18 rnds) or to desired length. Dec as above. Thumb: Pick up 8 sts from the thumbhole, 2 sts at each side and the 8 sts from the stitch holder (20 sts) and divide them on three needles (7 + 7 + 6). Knit 5 patterns (10 rnds) or to desired length. Dec as above.
